In order to encourage new attendees, and diversify conference
participants, EENC is pleased to offer scholarships for teachers
and college students interested in EE as a career. Click on
either "Teacher
Scholarships" or "Student Scholarships" to
link to more information and a registration form.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Progress Energy Foundation,
twenty teachers from across North Carolina will have the opportunity
to participate in the 2004 EENC Conference in Brevard for
free!
Scholarships will be awarded for $250 and will cover conference costs, EENC annual membership dues, and
a portion of costs for travel or a substitute teacher. Selected teachers will receive a one-year membership
to EENC. Our goal is to attract energetic participants that might otherwise not be able to participate
and ensure that this year's conference adequately reflects the breadth and diversity of the EE field.
It is the belief of EENC and the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) that when
equity is practiced by inviting diverse peoples to be seated, welcomed, and accepted as full participants
at the table, a richer dialogue develops.
The following ten counties were chosen to take part: Bertie, Halifax, Hertford, Northampton, Washington,
Jones, Warren, Vance, Columbus, and Robeson. These counties were chosen based on the percentage of students
each has enrolled in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. According to statistics from the North Carolina
Department of Public Instruction, in each of these counties over 70% of the students participate in the
program.
As many of you know, the conference is an excellent chance to meet and interact with the most successful
and enthusiastic teachers of environmental subject matter in the state. Participants are also able to
secure copies of effective lesson plans, earn Continuing Education Units, and amass credits towards their
Environmental Educator Certification.
We are thrilled to be able to offer scholarships this year, and scholarships are still available. If
you are a teacher in one of the above counties, or know of one who might be interested in the conference,
please fill out the nomination form below.
