The 13th Annual EENC Conference is titled “Discovering
Hidden Treasures in the North Carolina Piedmont.” This title drives an overall theme for
the conference, which will provide you and other environmental educators with opportunities to explore
and connect with an often overlooked but vital natural region of our state, while also allowing you to
discover hidden treasures of the environmental education field, including fellow educators, current issues
and effective environmental education tools and techniques. Conference offerings will be presented along
four main strands:
(1) Piedmont Treasures: Experiencing the
natural wonder of the place you’re in
(2) Our Fellow Environmental Educators: Sharing hidden talents, new ideas and proven techniques
(3) The Gift of Diversity: Integrating educators and students from diverse backgrounds
(4) Walking the Talk: Discovering ways to live what you teach
The conference will take place September 6
– 8, 2003 at the Haw River Program site (HARP) in Brown Summit, North Carolina. This site is ideally
located in the central Piedmont region of North Carolina, providing an awe-inspiring natural setting including
one of the largest remaining natural wetlands areas in the state. HARP is an environmental education program
committed to immersing students in an engaging, informative, entertaining and inspiring curriculum that
nurtures a lifelong respect for the relationships within our natural environment. The HARP staff is committed
to “greening” Brown Summit, and they provide many examples of how to live and teach in environmentally
sustainable ways. The site provides both onsite lodging and meeting space as well as forest, wetland,
and lake areas to explore.
Join us for a great weekend of learning and fun in
the heart of North Carolina!
