Beginning at Kituwah Mound, Mother Town of the Cherokee, we will learn the cultural and ecological connection between Kituwah Mound and Clingmans Dome, highest peak in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We will hike a by-pass trail and explore the spruce-fir ecosystem on our way to the observation tower. Hike is 1.5 miles round-trip.

Join members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee, Cherokee historians, and EENC Western Section Chair for this unique event.

  • Make sure to dress in layers and bring a raincoat! We will be hiking at high elevations where temperatures and precipitation are unpredictable.
  • Wear comfortable sturdy shoes. The by-pass trail is rocky and muddy in spots.
  • Pack a lunch. And bring plenty of water. We will have lunch once we get to the top.
  • We will meet at Kituwah Mound, 3831 Ela Rd, Bryson City, NC 28713 at 8:00am.
  • From there, we will be heading to a carpool spot to try and condense vehicles - but be prepared to drive!
  • Make sure you RSVP for this event so we can contact you in the event of poor weather (any weather calls will be made by 5 pm on Friday)

NPS Ranger listens as Micah Swimmer and Matt Tooni, GSMNP point towards Kituwah Mound from the Clingmans Dome observation tower.
