Directions to Lutheridge Conference Center:
Located in Arden, NC, on Hendersonville Rd. (US 25), about 1 block south of Airport Rd. 

From I-26:

  • take Exit 40 and go East on Airport Road (away from the airport) to Hendersonville Rd.  
  • Turn right, then right into the Lutheridge drive
From I-40:
  • take Exit 50
  • go south on Hendersonville Road for about 10 miles
  • Cross Airport Road
  • turn right into the Lutheridge drive


Please use your favorite mapping program (Google, Yahoo, etc.) to find the best route to Lutheridge from your departure location.  Enter this physical address for Lutheridge:

South Mountains EELE - Wild, Wonderful, Water

Please pack your lunch.  It will not be provided, and there are few lunch options near the park.

 South Mountains State Park is located in Burke County, 20.5 miles south of Morganton.

From I-40

  • turn south on exit 105 (NC 18),
  • travel 11.1 miles
  • right turn onto SR 1913 (Sugarloaf Road)
  • turn left Old NC 18 (4.3 miles)
  • travel 2.7 miles and make a
  • right turn onto SR 1901 (Ward's Gap Road).
  • The park is 1.4 miles off SR 1901 on SR 1904 (South Mountains Park Avenue).
  • Travel one mile from South Mountain Park Avenue to the South Mountains State Park gate.

Friday Field Trips

Geological raft trip through time on the French Broad River

Meet at:  Nantahala Outdoor Center’s French Broad River Outpost located on Highway 25/70 between Marshall and Hot Springs.

When:  Friday, October 26, 12:00 PM. Trip will last until about 5:30 PM. 

Directions: 
From Asheville

  • take Highway 19/23 toward Weaverville
  • Just before Weaverville, exit onto Highway 25/70 toward Hot Springs. Stay on Highway 25/70 through Marshall
  • Once the road changes from 4-lane to 2-lane, go another 6.5 miles. Look for the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) French Broad River Outpost on the left near the top of a hill. The entrance is on the left at the top of the hill past the sign and parking area.

(NOTE: If you see the Walnut Volunteer Fire Dept., you’ve gone too far.)

 Bring: Cloths and shoes to get wet in.  Cotton clothes will stay wet and you may get cold, so wool or other fabric that dries quickly will keep you warmer.  You can leave a change of clothes in your car at the Outpost.  Showers and changing rooms are available there.  A bus will transport us to the put-in to start the trip and will pick us up at the take-out for the ride back to the Outpost. 

NOC will provide a waterproof paddling jacket, a life jacket, and a helmet for each person.

There is a 10-minute hike to one of the rock outcrops during the trip.  Wear shoes suitable for a short hike, and remember your shoes will get wet. 

Food:  Lunch is not provided, so eat lunch before the trip.  You can bring a snack or drink for the river, but there is limited space to carry food and drink in the rafts.  

The Colburn Earth Science Museum has also invited you to take a self-guided tour of the museum on Friday morning. The museum is located in Pack Place, downtown AshevillePlease present this sheet to the museum attendant.

  • Turn Left out of Lutheridge onto Highway 25
  • Drive about nine miles
  • Turn right onto College Avenue in Downtown Asheville
  • Pack Place will be on your right.

  •  Turn Left Out Of Lutheridge, drive about 3 miles
  • Turn Right onto the Blue Ridge Parkway
  • Turn Right and travel North
  • Drive about 5.5 miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway
  • Take the US-70 W exit on the left
  • Merge onto Tunnel Rd/US-70
  • Go 1.1 mi
  • Turn right at Beverly Rd (light at the Groce Methodist Church
  • Turn right at New Haw Creek Rd
  • Right at Bell Rd
  • Left into Evergreen parking lot

Riverbend Farm - Exploring Sustainable Living on Biltmore Estate
1:00 - 5:00.  Come early if you want to tour the house on your own.  Bring your own lunch, or plan to buy lunch at full price at the restaurants.

Once at the Estate turn left into the Group Sales Office. Go to the ticket counter and get your ticket. You may want to visit the Welcome Center there is a five-minute interpretive film you might want to watch.
You will need to keep your ticket with you at all times.
To drive to River Bend Farms
  • proceed to the ticket booth (15 minutes travel)
  • Turn right when the road ends
  • Turn left
  • Drive about 10 minutes and River Bend Farms will be on the right (after the Inn on Biltmore Estate)
You will pass the Winery on the right
The road will open into a parking lot – park

The program will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the picnic tables on the left (you are welcome to eat your lunch here)

 Directions from Lutheridge (15 Minutes travel) Turn Left out of Lutheridge

  • Drive north on US-25 for about 8 miles
  • Turn Left onto Lodge Street
  • Drive straight into Biltmore Estate
  • Once inside the Estate follow directions to the Welcome Center.
 
Directions from the Arboretum (25 minutes travel)
  • Turn Left and drive up to the Blue Ridge Parkway
  • Turn Left Onto the Blue Ridge Parkway
  • Drive six miles
  • Exit to 25 North (second exit) 
  • Travel 3.6 miles North 
  • Turn Left onto Lodge Street 
  • Enter the Estate
Directions from Evergreen Charter School (20 minutes travel)
  • Turn Right out of the School Driveway on Bell Rd 397 ft
  • Turn Left onto toward New Haw Creek Rd Drive for about 1.5 miles
  • Turn left to stay on New Haw Creek Rd
  • Go straight through the light onto Crockett Ave
  • Turn right at Beechwood Rd 0.2 mi
  • Turn left to stay on Beechwood Rd 0.4 mi
  • Turn right at NC-81/Swannanoa River Rd/US-74-ALT Continue to follow NC-81, 1.9 mi
  • Turn left at Biltmore Ave
  • Turn Right onto Lodge St
NC Arboretum

  • Take the exit for Rte. 191/Brevard Rd. – as you come down the Exit ramp, turn left into the drive for the Arboretum.
  • Tell the attendant at the gate that you are attending the EENC workshop.
  • Drive up to the visit center – park in the main parking lot.
  • Meet in the main entrance area of the visitor’s center.

Mountain Bike Exploration of Bent Creek


Waterfall Tour through Dupont State Forest
We will be meeting at the Buckforest Access Area Parking lot in DuPont State Forest at 1:30 pm on Sunday. A 12 passenger van that will be leaving from the conference center at 12:45 pm. We should be finished in DuPont around 3:30pm and be back at the conference center by 4:30 pm.

Wear sturdy hiking shoes (Moderate Trane). Bring water, camera, and
dress for the weather.

Driving Directions to Dupont State Forest:

  • Take NC-280 toward Brevard
  • Turn left (East) on US-64 and go 3.7 milesto the Texaco station in Penrose.
  • Turn right on Crab Creek Rd.,continue 4.3 miles
  • turn right (South) on DuPont Rd.  Travel South 4.0 miles on DuPont Road that turns into Staton Road. 
  • Go past the Hooker Falls Access to Buck Forest Access Area on the left.
